It feels like only yesterday when Near West developed our community’s first pharmacy and dental office since the early 1970’s (Walgreens and All Star Dental). Since then (2001), West Haven has witnessed an influx of exciting new developments and new opportunities. Retailers have taken notice as well. JeanWorks, Shoomi and Tonya’s Hush are among the many who have opened up shop recently.

Near West is also a principal developer behind future commercial developments in our community. We hope to make a very public announcement in the near future regarding the long anticipated grocery store at Madison and Western, Haven Square Shopping Center. We are absolutely thrilled to be in a position to remove our community from the City of Chicago’s list of community “food deserts”.

Of course Near West’s retail initiative and commercial developments are only small pieces compared to our greater efforts to increase the quality-of-life of all residents of the West Haven community. We offer free home repairs for seniors, host wildly popular after-school programs and summer sports activities, build homes, rent apartments, host community events (ie West Haven Day, spring cleaning), build enhanced green spaces, provide employment services and provide temporary housing for abused women.

Last but not least, Near West is proud to have actively provided a platform for community planning over the last 20 years. The recently published “West Haven: Rising Like the Phoenix” quality-of-life plan is in effect the third revised community-based plan since the late 1980s which Near West has facilitated. It has always been Near West’s mission to increase the quality of life for all residents, without displacement.

Near West would like to thank all of our partners and participants who made the “West Haven Now” publication possible. Thank you Mayor Richard M Daley and Alderman Robert Fioretti for your kind forwards. Thank you all members of Near West’s retail committee who have been actively engaged in the creation of “West Haven Now”. An extra special thanks to the Partnership for New Communities and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation who make Near West’s retail initiative possible.

We’d love to hear from you! If you have any further questions about local retail opportunities or wish to get involved in the West Haven’s quality-of-life planning process, please do not hesitate to reach out to Near West to be an active community member.
